Well, it's old news now of course, but it was very exciting to be included in a great field of comic talent that year (Glenn Christie, Jean Paul, Paul Tedeschini, and Kristeen von Hagen were the other nominees), let alone receive the award!

It was amazing and kind of odd getting a phone call informing us that we were even nominated for the sophomore edition of the newly-created Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award. Tim Sims (1961-1995) the brilliant, highly-respected Toronto-based comedian who died far too early, set an extremely high watermark of writing and performance excellence, and suddenly you couldn't help but feel a bit of pressure being mentioned in the same breath as him.

The fund, and the show around presenting it annually, has grown steadily in scope since we received it. In 1998, we were invited to be on the jury to help select the 1998 recipient. Our nominee was the insanely brilliant Gavin Crawford, who, after being named the 1998 recipient of the Award, has since gone on to much well-deserved success in Canada and the U.S. with his sharp writing and edgy, fully-realized character work. Among other things, he's had "The Gavin Crawford Show" air on The Comedy Network (Canada). Good stuff can happen to good people!

Around November of every year there is a "Cream of Comedy" televised presentation of the Award, which airs on The Comedy Network. In 2000, the first 5 recipients were invited to do short video segments of how the Award changed their lives. It was fun seeing what everyone came up with.

For more information on the TSEFA, past nominees and recipients, etc, check out their web site.

Here's what our award looks like.
